My mom said this on the first of every month for as long as I can remember. I do it too. I said it about 12:30 am. I woke up about then after falling asleep at 11:30 pm. Yes, we’re party animals :)

Lot’s of writing changes this year. A publisher has closed down, reverting rights back to me. Another publisher I won’t submit to anymore and will be getting four books back this January. I am submitting to two others, so we will see where that goes.

Strangely, I feel like a debut author again. A new author with no books out there. I am going to try my hand at self publishing this year. That is scary and exciting.

I’m even thinking of rebranding myself with a new name. Saying goodbye to Cristal and hello to…. ? That’s still in the works. Still lots to think about and plan.

Anyway, Happy New Year to everyone!

Biscuit Recipe

I haven’t been on my blog much lately. There hasn’t been much news in my world publishing wise. Although I am in edits with an editor that is very encouraging and optimistic about a contract. My fingers are crossed.

In the meantime, I made these biscuits yesterday and was asked to share the recipe. So here it is.

Biscuits with or without cheese

20141121_185947Preheat  oven to 450°F  –  425°F if you have a convection oven

Combine all dry:

2 c flour – I used unbleached, may need more for kneading
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tbs baking powder
1 tsp salt

It’s easier if you chunk up the butter. Put in flour mixture and use pastry cutter or two knives or whatever you have to cut butter into flour. It will look like coarse meal – does anyone REALLY know what that looks like? I doubt it. It will look a little roughed up and a tad chunky. Try and make sure there are no big chunks of butter left.

6 tbs butter, which just over 1/3 c

Then pour in the buttermilk. I don’t get fancy and add bit by bit. I just dump it in and use a fork to gently blend. It will be a bit sticky and wet. Don’t over mix it.

1 cup buttermilk – if you don’t have use 1 cup milk and 1 tbs vinegar and let sit for a few minutes. It will be thick.

Next, drop on a counter to pat out and knead. You may need a bit more flour to stop it from sticking to the counter. Pat to about 1/2 inch and then fold over, knead a couple time, fold over again, kneed and repeat about 4 or five times. Pat out to 1″ thick.

You can cut with a round cutter or cut into squares. But don’t saw the dough, press gently to cut.

Place on parchment paper lined cookie sheet. If you want soft sides, have them touch if you want crispy sides leave about an inch between.

Bake for 10 – 13 minutes

The bottom will be golden and the top as well. Mine needed about 3 extra minutes and could have used a little more to fully cook and be fluffy. But they were delicious!

Harley’s, Friday 13th & Full Moon

The combination of the two could be alarming, right? I know my morning has had it’s challenges so far.

I totally forgot today is Port Dover ride day in Ontario. That’s when thousands of bikers descend on this little Ontario town. It all started back in 1971 and to learn more, click on the link for more info and a whack of photo’s.

As I write this, I hear the roar of Harley’s on the road. It is a sight to behold for sure.

This morning at Tim Horton’s in Guelph, a whole pack of bikers from local club called Ghost Riders where fueling up with coffee and treats. The woman below caught my eye when she came into the coffee shop. I knew I had to take her picture and do a blog. She was very nice and yes, that is her bike!

1402667543345Rachel was very gracious and posed so we could get a closer look of her amazing ink :) Does that look like a blue jewel on her shoulder?

20140613_091605The collective.

pd bikesAnd for the full moon? Do you have trouble sleeping with it? Or do you find people around you edgier, moody, or generally freaks? I don’t have any handy moon shots, and most of the time they never turn out anyway. So instead here’s a sunset shot from St. Croix.

JB looked toward the door as everyone else did. Taio stood at the entrance, with Eva on one arm and a taller female who looked just like him on the other. He waited as everyone rose to their feet.
“That’s his mother, Queen Fainia Xochis of Drazlan,” Lo’Ren said from the seat next to him. “It’s customary for you to stand when she enters the room.”
“I’ve already pissed him off today, no need to do it again if it’s not totally necessary.” JB stood.
Taio proceeded through the door, followed by three other females. JB immediately found himself staring at one in particular.
Her head was cast down slightly, her face obscured by waves and waves of jet-black hair that brushed the swell of her round butt. She wore a pale-purple form-fitting dress. The floor-length gown had designs made of colored crystals. Her skin was the same color as Taio’s, but different. It seemed to glow. Her build was tall and slender with a hint of curves where they were needed most.
She turned her head.
He caught his breath.
As her lavender eyes locked on Lo’Ren, he willed her to look his way. Her features were sharp and foreign, but beautiful in every way. Her cheekbones were high and defined. Her lips were full and pink. She had a look of longing in her eyes and he wanted to know why.
No, he needed to know why.
Was she upset?
Who had taken the joy away from such a perfect female?
Look at me. I want to know you.
“Uh, unless you’re inviting Taio to kill you, I would sit down,” Lo’Ren said, tugging on his sleeve.
He glanced around to find he was the only one still standing. JB sat but kept his eyes on the female across the room. “Why would he kill me? She’s not human.”
“She’s his younger sister, Princess Saia.” Lo’Ren popped a piece of meat in her mouth and chewed. “Look the other way, human.”
That information alone should have been enough to make him turn his head and focus his attention on something else, but he couldn’t.
Princess Saia.
Rasha grabbed Saia in a bear hug and lifted her from her feet. JB watched, waiting for her to turn his way. His heart thumped. He wanted to go to her, meet her.
She was his.
He shook his head, trying to dislodge the misplaced thought.
Where the hell did that come from?
Then she turned toward him. Their eyes met.
And there it was.
His heart felt as though it was seized in a tight fist then dropped to the pit of his stomach.
“This is where you take my advice before you get into trouble.”
“She’s looking at me,” he whispered.
Every nerve in his body sprang to life. Her eyes were framed in the heaviest lashes he’d ever seen. And when she blinked, they looked like wings of butterflies.
He sighed and felt as if his body had melted into the chair.
Lo’Ren groaned. “Taio will kill you.”
“I don’t care.” He couldn’t drag his gaze away. A small smile graced beautiful full lips. Lips he wanted to claim for his own. From the side, her face had appeared long, but no, it was round and soft. Her nose was perky and petite. “Princess Saia,” JB said breathlessly.
Lo’Ren shook her head. “I shouldn’t have told you her name. I don’t want any part of this.”
“I would have found out anyway.” Nothing could have stopped him from knowing her name.
Lo’Ren blew out a heavy breath. “Did I mention that she’s Taio’s only sister?”

Writing Hot at Harlequin E

As a newly minted Harlequin E author, I was asked to write a post on “writing hot”. You can find the post by clicking here

I can’t wait for my new book to be released with them . She Wants It will be out this fall. No cover yet, but as soon as I have one, I’ll let you all know!

A woman used to being in control must learn to let go and let her new lover give her her ultimate fantasy. Torn between loving and leaving the talented chef, she soon learns he’s just as talented in bedroom as he is in the kitchen. It isn’t long before a whole lot more than food gets fired up under the hot Florida sun.

No, not the kind that breathe fire. Although sometimes I feel like breathing fire with this damn hand of mine after surgery. Carpal tunnel. Regular pain in the butt.
I had surgery on my left hand in December and it seemed to bounce back pretty good. March 31 I had surgery on my right hand. It’s not doing so good. So my Dragon is a headset and microphone.
It’s tricky to get used to but I’m given it a try. I have to keep writing and I can’t use my hands so I have to use my voice. I had techie son buy me Dragon speak software and install it on my laptop. I’ve done the training that it asks you to do and now just a matter of getting used to it. Sometimes I feel silly talking and especially don’t want to talk when people are around.
So far so good, but I don’t know all the commands which I’m sure I’ll learn. I need to figure out how to make it work across platforms like email, social media, etc.
One thing I’ve discovered, it doesn’t recognize some names, so either I have ordinary hero and heroine names or have to go back in and change them all.
And you have to remember to turn the microphone off or it will record conversations going on all around which can be interesting for sure.

So that’s it for me for now and why you won’t see me around social media much for the next little while.
Happy Dragoning!

Krystal Shannan Spotlight

Vegas Mates, Book 4

Krystal Shannan

 takingnicoleB&N (1)

The last thing Nicole Demakis remembers was getting in the car with Sarah’s kidnapper and driving away. Now she faces the cold hard truth. The kidnapper, an agent of the Council, is her mate. But he refuses to claim her, and the Council may take everything away before she even has a chance to convince him to trust her.

Aaron Katsaros was ordered to deliver Nicole to her grandparents, the Antipas royal wolves. It should’ve been an easy task. Clean. No hiccups. But this infuriating woman, this wolf, his mate…is one hiccup after another and she’s arousing him to the point of pain. With his sister’s life hanging in the balance, he refuses to allow his passion to cost him the only family he has left.

Can he find a way to save his mate, or will he be forced to watch another claim the woman he loves?

Krystal Shannan goes to sleep every night dreaming of mythical realms with werewolves, vampires, fae, and dragons. Occasional a fabulous, completely human story slips into the mix, but powers and abilities usually crop up without fail, twisting reality into whatever her mind can conceive.

As a child, her parents encouraged her interests in Ancient Greek and Roman mythology and all things historical and magickal. As an adult, the interests only grew. She is a child of Neverland and refuses to ever stop believing in fairies. She is guilty of indulging in and being a Buffy the Vampire Slayer groupie as well as an Angel fan. For those of you unfamiliar with the world of Joss Whedon, you are missing out!

She also makes sure to watch as many action and adventure movies as possible. The more exciting the better. Yippee-Ki-Yay… If you don’t know the end of that phrase, then you probably don’t like the same movies.

She enjoys reading romance in all genres, but especially paranormal. Her favorite book is ACHERON by Sherrilyn Kenyon. But really, if it has a ‘Happily Ever After’, she’s on board!

Krystal writes stories full of action, snark, magick, and heart-felt emotion. If you are looking for leisurely-paced sweet romance, her books are probably not for you. However, for those looking for a magickal ride, filled with adventure, passion, and just a hint of humor. Welcome home.

My Writing Process

Tina Christopher asked me to be on this blog hop with her. Of course I said yes! Next week look for Serena Shay‘s post on her writing topic

So, my writing process. Here goes.

1) What am I working on?
Right now I’m finishing up edits for my release with HarlequinE coming this Sept or Oct. It’s an erotic romance, menage. Set in a tropical climate. Not only the weather is hot, so are the guys!
2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?
I have no idea. We are all different. But to actually say how is something I couldn’t put my finger on. If anything though, my editor says “your writing is on fire” :)  meaning the sex scenes. *blushes*
3) Why do I write what I do?
It was by fluke really. My first book was No Fantasy Required. I wrote it without the intention of it being so hot. But, when it was accepted and after edits, I started my second story, Being Ariana. It was also a hot story and then it just seemed to flow organically and the rest is history. Although a story I will be working on after the edits on She Wants It won’t be erotic. It will be hot though (can’t seem to get away from that :) )
My January 2014 release Four For the Show. An erotic adventure where our heroine is treated to sexual delights by three men and we have some male/male action going on too.
4) How does your writing process work?
Again, it’s one of those things that never seems to be the same. When I have an idea for a story, and I do have lots, I’ll send myself an email with the title or scene or whatever it was the popped into my brain. Sometimes I can’t let it go and have to write a few thousand words to get it out of me.
I try to write every day. Last year wasn’t that great though after my mom died and my writing just didn’t seem to be there. I’m getting back into the swing of things and hoping to get a lot done this year.
If I focus, I can write 1000 words on my lunch. When I get home, I like to write from 2 – 6 for another 2000 words. Then I’ve accomplished 3000 words a day plus work full time. If I accomplish this then I feel a little better and less guilty for doing other things in the evening.
I am a procrastinator. It’s really hard to shake too. Like I’m doing this blog at 4pm on Sunday when I should have had it wrapped up days ago!
So remember to visit Serena next week when she tells you about her writing process on 17th March.
Serena Shay took to writing out her fantasies in a desperate bid to bring the voices in her head to life and as a way to indulge her paranormal desires.
